Santa Cruz Profunda
National Route 3 at Cañadón León, south of Caleta Olivia

The coast along Route 3

An estuary, penguins, stone forests and Magellan's bay. The coast that many people drive straight past.

The route (north to south)

  1. Caleta Olivia: the gateway from Comodoro Rivadavia.
  2. Fitz Roy: turn off on RP 27 towards Puerto Deseado; the province recommends filling up here before heading to the Petrified Forests.
  3. Jaramillo Petrified Forests: turnoff at km 2,074 onto RP 49 (about 50 km of gravel).
  4. Tres Cerros: a service station right on the highway.
  5. Puerto San Julián: the bay, the Nao Victoria and the coastal circuit.
  6. Further south: Comandante Luis Piedra Buena and Río Gallegos.

How many days

To do it without rushing, we suggest 4 or 5 days between Caleta Olivia and San Julián: one or two in Deseado (if you want to go to Penguin Island, it depends on the weather), half a day at the Petrified Forests and one or two in San Julián. This is our own suggestion, not official data.
